Engineering Futures: Negotiating Job Offers

Event Type: Professional Development

Presenter: Jon Sonsteby
About the Session: “Negotiating.” Too often this word makes many of us uncomfortable..... right alongside “public speaking.” As Dr. Chester Karrass, a famous negotiation educator, famously entitled a book: "In Business as in Life – You Don't Get What You Deserve, You Get What You Negotiate." Visualize an x-y chart: the y-axis represents your compensation; the x-axis represents time. As we all have learned from calculus, taking the integral of that curve will yield the area under that curve. And that area represents our cumulative earned compensation!!! It’s important to negotiate a job offer. We’ll spend an interactive session addressing these topics and sharing experiences: Can I negotiate a job offer? I’m certain I can’t negotiate my first job offer after graduating..... can I? Is a job offer more than just salary? (Spoiler alert: YES!) Techniques for negotiating a job offer. Answering the dreaded “Tell me your salary” and “What are your salary expectations?” questions.
